All things Hamtramck

Ready for your close-up … Filmmaker Matthew Winne wants to know your story. Specifically, how you arrived in Hamtramck and your experiences living here and what it was like growing up here.

If you’d like to be a part of this documentary, called “Faces of Hamtramck,” stop by the public library on Saturday, Sept. 6 anytime from 2-5 p.m.

Those who would like to participate are asked to first call (313) 893-5027 or (586) 855-7336. You can also email the filmmaker at facesofhamtramck@gmail.com.

The film is sponsored by the state of Michigan and the city of Hamtramck.

Shout out … Hamtramck gets a mention in a new book called “Driving Michigan: Mile by Mile on I-75.” Author Leslie Mertz traveled 400 miles on the freeway and stopped at all sorts of cities.

She talks about the origin of Hamtramck’s name, how it came to be developed and explains to readers what the heck pierogies, and golabki are.

Of course, everyone in Hamtramck knows the answer to that.

Congratulations … Madonna University students Sarah Cavataio, Fatima Halkic and Michele Webb made it to the Dean’s List during the spring-summer term. We wish them continued success.

Holy month … September is a very special month for our Muslim community. This is the period of Ramadan. It’s believed that this is when the Koran was revealed to the angel Gabriel, who in turn, revealed it to Prophet Muhammad.

Muslims fast from dawn to sunset during this month as a way to teach patience, humility and empathy for the less fortunate.

Happy festivalgoer …At the Labor Day Festival Zilch was approached by Cynthia Pudrith, niece of Hamtramck resident Sandra Dziedziula, who asked if she could have her photograph taken because she has never been in a newspaper before.

Well, who can say no to that?

So, here you go Cynthia. You now have official bragging rights.
